Mitt Romney chose a Roman Catholic as his vice-presidential running mate. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) is the chair of the U.S. House of Representative’s Budget Committee.
Romney pointed out that he is not only a fiscal conservative, but also a leading conservative on Catholic social issues like opposing abortion and gay marriage. “A faithful Catholic, Paul believes in the worth and dignity of every human life,” Romney said, when introducing him. Ryan has an abiding respect for all human life, including unborn children and their mothers, the disabled and the elderly.”
Catholics have now become a political force to be reckoned with in the United States. Ryan is certainly going to appeal to many mid-west and “middle-of-the-road” Catholics who are considered the “quintessential swing vote.”
“No presidential candidate has won the White House without winning Catholics since at least the early 1990s.” This fact, no doubt, drove Romany in the direction of selecting a conservative, low-key Roman Catholic as his running mate.
Both parties will have Roman Catholic vice-presidential candidates, as Joe Biden is also Roman Catholic. President Obama will be the only protestant among the four candidates in the two parties. Romney is a Mormon.
“The Catholic Church has helped frame this year’s election by strenuously opposing a rule in President Obama’s health care law that requires insurance companies to provide free contraception coverage to nearly all American employees, including those at Catholic colleges and hospitals.”
“In an interview with CNN, former GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich, who is Catholic, said that Ryan would shore up support in a Catholic community that feels it is ‘under siege.’”
Roman Catholicism “is silently growing into power.
